French Onion Roast Beef Grilled Cheese Sandwich
This indulgent sandwich combines tender roast beef, sweet caramelized onions, and melted cheese between two slices of crispy, golden-brown bread.
Inspired by the rich flavors of French onion soup, it is a comforting meal that is perfect for lunch, dinner, or a hearty snack.
Ingredients
4 slices of thick bread (sourdough or country bread)
200 g thinly sliced roast beef
2 large onions, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon olive oil
4 slices Swiss, Gruyère, or mozzarella cheese
1 teaspoon sugar
Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions
Heat the butter and olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
Add the sliced onions and cook slowly for 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they become soft, golden, and caramelized. Add the sugar halfway through cooking to enhance sweetness.
Season the onions with a pinch of salt and black pepper.
Butter one side of each bread slice.
Place two slices of bread, buttered side down, on a clean surface. Layer with cheese, roast beef, and a generous amount of caramelized onions.
Add another slice of cheese on top and cover with the remaining bread slices, buttered side facing outward.
Heat a skillet over medium-low heat and cook the sandwiches for 3–4 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula, until the bread is golden and crisp and the cheese has fully melted.
Remove from the skillet, let rest for one minute, then slice and serve warm.
Serving Suggestion
Serve with a cup of hot coffee, soup, or a fresh green salad.
The combination of melted cheese, savory beef, and sweet caramelized onions creates a rich and satisfying flavor in every bite.
