Smothered Turkey Wings Recipe
Ingredients:
4 turkey wings (about 2-3 pounds)
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 medium onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup chicken broth (or turkey broth, if available)
1/2 cup heavy cream (optional, for creaminess)
2 tablespoons flour (for gravy thickening)
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon thyme
1/2 teaspoon rosemary (optional)
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for a little heat)
Salt and pepper, to taste
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (optional, for added depth of flavor)
Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions:
Prep the Turkey Wings:
Pat the turkey wings dry with paper towels. Season them generously with salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, thyme, rosemary, and cayenne pepper.
Brown the Turkey Wings:
Heat olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the turkey wings and brown them on all sides for about 5-7 minutes. This step adds depth of flavor to the dish.
Once browned, remove the wings from the pan and set them aside.
Make the Gravy:
In the same skillet, add the chopped onion and cook for 2-3 minutes, until softened.
Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds, being careful not to burn it.
Sprinkle the flour over the onions and garlic, stirring constantly to make a roux (a thickening base). Cook for about 1-2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
Add Broth and Cream:
Slowly add the chicken broth to the skillet, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet for extra flavor.
Stir in the heavy cream (if using), Worcestershire sauce, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Bring to a simmer.
Return Turkey Wings to the Skillet:
Add the browned turkey wings back to the skillet, ensuring they are covered in the gravy. If the gravy isn’t covering the wings, add a little more broth or water to ensure they’re almost submerged.
Simmer and Cook:
Reduce the heat to low and cover the skillet. Let the turkey wings simmer for about 45-60 minutes, or until they are tender and cooked through. You can occasionally check and stir the gravy.
Serve:
Once the turkey wings are cooked and tender, garnish with freshly chopped parsley.
Serve the smothered turkey wings over mashed potatoes, rice, or with cornbread for a comforting meal.
Tips:
For extra flavor: You can marinate the turkey wings in the seasoning mix overnight to infuse them with more flavor before cooking.
For crispy skin: If you prefer a crispier skin on your turkey wings, you can place the wings in a hot oven (around 400°F) for 20-25 minutes after browning them, and then finish the recipe in the skillet with the gravy.
Add vegetables: You can add sliced carrots, bell peppers, or celery to the gravy for extra flavor and texture.
This recipe results in tender turkey wings smothered in a savory, flavorful gravy. Enjoy!
