Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup water
- 2 tbsp cornstarch
- 1 tbsp white vinegar
- 1 tbsp unflavored gelatin powder
- Natural or food-safe coloring (food coloring, beet juice, turmeric, spirulina, etc.)
- Optional:
fine glitter, flower petals, or tissue paper for decoration
- Non-stick surface (plastic sheet, silicone mat, or parchment paper)
- String or suction hook for hanging
- Hole punch
Directions:
1. In a saucepan, combine 1/2 cup of water, 2 tablespoons of cornstarch, 1 tablespoon of white vinegar, and 1 tablespoon of unflavored gelatin powder. Stir thoroughly until well mixed and there are no lumps.
2. Gently heat the mixture over medium-low heat, stirring constantly. After about 3-5 minutes, the mixture will thicken into a gooey, pourable gel.
Remove the saucepan from heat.
3. Divide the thickened mixture into small bowls. Add your chosen natural colorants to each bowl and mix well.
4. Pour thin layers of the colored mixture onto your non-stick surface, shaping them in any design you like. You can use toothpicks to swirl colors together, press in flower petals, or sprinkle glitter for added decoration.
5. Allow the suncatchers to air dry for 24-48 hours until they are firm and peelable. If using a thicker layer, you may need to flip them halfway through the drying process to ensure even drying.
6. Once the suncatchers are dry and flexible, use a hole punch to create a hole at the top of each suncatcher. Thread a string through the hole.
7. Hang your beautiful eco-art in a sunny window and enjoy the vibrant display as the sunlight creates a colorful glow.
Tips & Variations:
- For a more textured look, try adding different materials such as pieces of tissue paper or dried leaves into the mixture.
- Experiment with layering colors! Pour a base layer and let it dry slightly before adding another color on top for a marbled effect.
